Novaform Pillow Lounger – The background of pillows is quite interesting as we observe the progression of pillows from ancient times to the present day.
The shape along with the contents of the pillow have changed over time. Back in Greece, the wealthier people rested their heads and feet on upholstered cushions and pillows. The Egyptians believed that the mind is the seat of life and place much focus lavishly on the pillows of people who were dead and put to rest.
The thought that the soft pillow stole the body’s energy so that they made their pillows of wood, ceramic or leather materials. They believed that if they would put herbs to the pillow it’d cure diseases and it could turn white hair black, revive lost teeth and give sweet dreams.
For centuries, people had their heads elevated not just with pillows but utilized large cylinder shaped bolsters. The bolsters were often the width of the mattress and filled with down or some kind of batting and sewn shut. They placed them against the headboard to support the pillows. Along the face of the bolster, was placed a set of pillows at each end. This notion continued up into the mid-1800’s thinking it was beneficial for your system.
From the 19th and 20th centuries, bed pillows started to carry on a brand new look and became fancier within their appearance. Large square pillows were placed from the mattress cover and then laid against the pillows that were utilized to sleep on.
Together with the American textile business booming through the 1800’s, covers for pillows went from linen to cotton ticking that’s still seen on pillows today’s.
Traditionally, the pillows were stuffed with feathers and down but as these changed so the outer material changed as well. Natural batting has been replaced by artificial polyester filler as it managed to keep its shape. It was also less expensive and easier to launder.
The use of expensive down is the ideal filler. Thousands of clusters are found in down and it traps warm air hence preventing heat from being lost. Duck down is little, plentiful and more affordable. The fill power of down is graded by volume of the distance is steps. The greater the volume, the greater the load power. Although feathers are strong, they are not soft. In American pillows, duck feathers are a most commonly used filler. Some manufacturers will combine up with feathers to produce a more comfortable and less expensive pillow.
Polyester is a synthetic material that is also popular. A cheaper polyester is one of continuous solid filament which has a great form but unfortunately, loses the loft sooner. A better polyester is the Hollofill which has a continuous filament fiber that has a hollow heart which provides the pillow more loft for a lengthier time period than the cheaper grade polyester.
The pillow casing is decided by the pillow filling. Normally the pillow casing is most often cotton or cotton polyester with the weave changing determined by the filling that is used. Feather and down fillings will require an expensive and densely tight woven cloth that will keep the bottoms out of round the casing and bending the sleeper and will keep all the fine down from coming out of the cloth.
These cloth casings sometimes have starch on them during manufacturing which makes them stiffer and less able for the feathers to penetrate the cloth.
