Ninja Turtle Pillow Buddy – The background of pillows is quite interesting as we watch the progression of pillows from ancient times to the present moment.

The shape together with the contents of this pillow have shifted over time. In Greece, the wealthier people rested their feet and heads on embroidered cushions and pillows. The Egyptians thought that the head is the seat of life and put much focus lavishly on the pillows of people who were deceased and put to rest.

The thought that the soft pillow stole the body’s vitality so that they made their pillows of wood, ceramic or leather substances. They thought that if they would put herbs into the pillow it would cure diseases and it could turn white hair, restore lost teeth and provide sweet dreams.

For centuries, people had their heads elevated not only with pillows but used big cylinder shaped bolsters. The bolsters were often the width of the mattress and filled with down or some kind of batting and sewn shut. They put them against the headboard to encourage the pillows. Along the face of the bolster, was put a set of pillows at each end. The sleeper ended up sleeping in a nearly upright position. This thought continued up into the mid-1800’s thinking it had been beneficial for your system.

From the 19th and 20th centuries, bed pillows started to carry on a new appearance and became fancier within their look. Large square pillows were put in the mattress cover and then placed against the pillows that were used to sleep on.

From the 1840’s when cotton became easier to get, American girls hand weaved pillow cases and decorated them with their needlepoint and placing their initials on each pillow case. With the American textile industry booming throughout the 1800’s, covers for pillows went from linen to cotton ticking that’s still seen on pillows now’s.

Traditionally, the pillows were stuffed with feathers and down but as these shifted so the outer material changed too. Natural batting was replaced by artificial polyester filler since it was able to retain its shape. It was also less costly and easier to launder.

The batting or filling is the main quality of the pillow. The use of pricey down is the best filler. It’s made of a light, fluffy undercoating of a duck. Down has a quill point but no shaft which makes it more resilient. Thousands of clusters are found in down and it traps warm atmosphere hence preventing heat from being lost. Duck down is small, plentiful and more affordable. The fill power of down is graded by quantity of this distance is measures. The higher the quantity, the better the load power. Although feathers are powerful, they aren’t soft. In American pillows, duck feathers are a most commonly used filler. Some producers will combine up with feathers to produce a more comfortable and less costly pillow.

Polyester is a synthetic material that’s also popular. A less costly polyester is one of constant solid filament which has a great shape but sadly, loses the loft sooner. An improved polyester is your Hollofill which has a continuous filament fiber that has a hollow heart which provides the pillow more loft for a longer period of time compared to less expensive grade polyester.

The pillow casing is decided by the pillow filling. Usually the pillow casing is most often cotton or cotton polyester with the weave changing according to the filling that’s used. Feather and down fillings will require an expensive and densely tight woven cloth that will keep the shafts from puncturing the casing and poking the sleeper and will keep all the fine from coming from the fabric.

These cloth casings sometimes have starch on them during production which makes them stiffer and less in charge of the feathers to penetrate the fabric.
