My Pillow Loft Levels – The history of pillows is quite interesting as we observe the progression of pillows from ancient times to the present moment.

The shape together with the contents of this pillow have changed over time. In Greece, the wealthier people rested their heads and feet on upholstered cushions and pillows. The Egyptians believed that the head is the seat of life and place much attention lavishly on the pillows of people who were dead and put to rest.

The thought that the soft cushion stole the body’s energy so that they made their pillows of ceramic, wood or leather materials. They believed that if they would put herbs to the pillow it would heal diseases and it might turn white hair black, restore lost teeth and provide sweet dreams.

For centuries, people had their heads increased not just with pillows but used large cylinder shaped bolsters. The bolsters were frequently the width of the bed and stuffed with down or some kind of batting and sewn shut. They placed them against the headboard to support the pillows. Along the face of the bolster, was placed a set of pillows at each end. This thought continued up into the mid-1800’s thinking it was advantageous for the body.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, bed pillows began to take on a new appearance and became fancier in their look. Large square pillows were placed from the mattress cover and then laid against the pillows that were used to maneuver on.

In the 1840’s when cotton became easier to get, American girls hand weaved pillow cases and decorated them with their needlepoint and placing their initials on each pillow case. Together with the American textile business prospering through the 1800’s, covers for pillows went from linen to cotton ticking which is still seen on pillows now’s.

Traditionally, the pillows were stuffed with down and feathers but as these changed so the outer substance changed as well. Natural batting has been replaced by synthetic polyester filler as it managed to retain its shape. It was less expensive and easier to launder.

The usage of pricey down is the best filler. Countless clusters are observed in down and it traps warm atmosphere hence preventing heat from being lost. Duck down is little, plentiful and more affordable. The fill power of down is rated by quantity of this space is steps. The higher the quantity, the better the load power. Although feathers are strong, they aren’t soft. In American pillows, duck feathers are a most commonly used filler. Some producers will combine down with feathers to produce a more comfortable and less expensive pillow.

Polyester is a synthetic substance that’s also popular. A cheaper polyester is one of continuous solid filament which has a great shape but unfortunately, loses the attic sooner. A better polyester is your Hollofill which has a continuous filament fiber that has a hollow core which provides the cushion more attic for a longer time period compared to cheaper grade polyester.

The pillow casing is decided by the cushion filling. Usually the pillow casing is most frequently cotton or cotton polyester using the weave varying determined by the filling that’s being used. Feather and down fillings will require an expensive and densely tight woven cloth that will keep the shafts from round the casing and poking the sleeper and will keep all of the down from coming from the cloth.

These cloth casings occasionally have starch on them through manufacturing which makes them stiffer and less able for the feathers to permeate the cloth.
