Letter Shaped Pillows – The background of pillows is very interesting as we observe the progression of pillows from ancient times to the present moment.

The shape together with the contents of the pillow have changed over time. In Greece, the wealthier individuals rested their heads and feet on upholstered cushions and pillows. The Egyptians thought that the head is the seat of life and put much focus lavishly on the pillows of people who were dead and laid to rest.

The Chinese thought that the soft pillow stole the body’s vitality so they made their pillows of ceramic, wood or leather substances. They thought that if they’d put herbs to the pillow it would heal ailments and it could turn white hair black, restore lost teeth and give sweet dreams.

The bolsters were often the width of the mattress and filled with downward or some form of batting and then sewn shut. They placed them against the headboard to support the pillows. Along the face of the bolster, was placed a set of pillows at each end. The sleeper ended up sleeping in an almost upright position. This notion continued up to the mid-1800’s believing it had been beneficial for your system.

From the 19th and 20th centuries, bed pillows started to take on a brand new look and became fancier in their look. Large square pillows were placed in the decorative pillow cover and then laid against the pillows that were utilized to maneuver on.

Together with the American textile industry prospering throughout the 1800’s, covers for pillows went from linen to cotton ticking that’s still seen on pillows now’s.

Traditionally, the pillows were stuffed with feathers and down but as these changed so the outer material changed as well. Natural batting was replaced by synthetic polyester filler as it managed to retain its shape. It was also less expensive and easier to launder.

The batting or filling is the main quality of the pillow. The use of expensive down is the best filler. It is produced from a light, fluffy undercoating of a duck. Thousands of clusters are found in downward and it traps warm air hence preventing heat from being lost. Duck down is small, plentiful and less expensive. The fill power of down is rated by quantity of the distance is steps. The greater the quantity, the greater the load power. Although feathers are powerful, they aren’t soft. In American pillows, duck feathers are a most widely used filler. Some manufacturers will blend down with feathers to make a more comfortable and less expensive pillow.

Polyester is a synthetic material that’s also popular. A cheaper polyester is one of constant solid filament that has a good form but unfortunately, loses the loft sooner. A better polyester is the Hollofill that has a continuous filament fiber that has a hollow heart which provides the pillow more loft for a lengthier time period compared to less expensive grade polyester.

The pillow casing is decided by the pillow filling. Usually the pillow casing is most often cotton or cotton wool with the weave varying according to the filling that’s being used. Feather and down dentures will probably require an expensive and densely tight woven cloth that will keep the bottoms out of round the casing and bending the sleeper and will keep all of the down from coming out of the cloth.

These cloth casings occasionally have starch on them through manufacturing making them stiffer and less able for the feathers to permeate the cloth. All that’s needed is a strong thread to sew the pillow near.
